The Solar Car Team at UC Davis is a non-profit, student-run organization that designs, builds, tests, and races road-legal solar vehicles. Our first vehicle has been named “Solarri” and is currently under design and manufacturing stages.
Our team is compromised of dozens of engineers and other varying STEM majors, ranging from electrical, mechanical, and materials science engineering to computer science, physics and economics. With such a large scale project, our group is currently divided into 9 sub-teams which include: Administration/Business, Battery/Power, Chassis, Composites, Controls & Data, Shell/Aerodynamics, Solar Array, and Suspension.
Our mission is to provide hands-on opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and create complex systems while becoming exposed to project management and real-world engineering. And through design and raising awareness, our hopes are to connect industries and companies with our dedicated members.
Our goal and focus is to compete in the American Solar Challenge & the Formula Sun Grand Prix hosted in a cross-country time & distance rally event respectively. Through participation in solar races, exposure to education about alternative energy, and outreaching to the community, the team aims to raise awareness about solar energy integrated in vehicles while focusing on the engineering challenges inherent in solar vehicle technology.
To become a member, you must email the team captain and give a short explanation as to why you’ve become interested, how you’d like to contribute, if you have any related past experience, and which team you’re interested in joining (if known at the time). They will then reply to you and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
