UC 4-H Youth Development Program

Program Overview / Impact

The University of California 4-H Youth Development Program helps young people, ages 5-19, reach their fullest potential as competent, confident individuals who contribute to and are connected with their communities. Using an experiential educational model, 4-H helps youth develop essential skills that they will use throughout their lives, such as identifying and nurturing interests, desiring knowledge, setting goals, self-reflection, adapting to new situations, communicating, and responding to the needs of others.

4-H STEM programs combine the strengths of experiential, hands-on education and inquiry-based science learning with a positive youth development framework that addresses the developmental and educational needs of young people. By offering engaging science programming in out-of-school time settings, youth are provided with a variety of free choice and hands-on learning opportunities that promote excitement in learning about natural phenomena.

How to Get Involved

Youth ages 5-19 can enroll in 4-H programs through their county’s Cooperative Extension Office. Adults are a key component of the 4-H program and may apply to become a volunteer through their county’s Cooperative Extension Office. Find your local office at http://4h.ucanr.edu/Get_Involved/
