Program Overview / Impact
Want to get involved in sustainable agriculture across California? Work as an intern, volunteer, or research associate at SAREP. SAREP is a statewide program dedicated to strengthening sustainable farming and food systems in California through research and education. SAREP is housed within the Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI) at UC Davis and within UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR).
SAREP works with farmers, farm workers, ranchers, researchers, educators, regulators, policymakers, industry professionals, consumers, and community organizations to promote economically viable, environmentally sound, and socially just agricultural and food systems.
Work at SAREP has two broad focus areas:
- Food and Society: We work to ensure that California residents have access to healthy food and that communities throughout California thrive. Our recent work in this area includes evaluating procurement options for farm-to-school programs, engaging youth in leading tours of urban farms and gardens, providing farmers and ranchers with guides and tip sheets for selling to wholesale outlets, and coordinating opportunities for regional food hubs.
- Agriculture, Resources, and the Environment: Through partnerships with farmers, interdisciplinary research, and innovative communication, we find science-based solutions to today’s biggest environmental and resource use challenges. Our recent work in this area includes creating a solution center for nutrient management, carbon footprinting and life cycle assessment research on California crops, exploring the viability of agroforestry systems in California, and publishing a statewide assessment of the ways that nitrogen flows in and out of the state.
Students are an instrumental part of SAREP. We offer internships, volunteer opportunities, and research assistantships to undergraduates and graduate students.
